John Doughty was born in Bilston in 1865. Doughty had a Welsh mother and an Irish father. Along with his brother, Roger Doughty, he played football for Druids. In consecutive seasons, 1885 and 1886, the brothers won the Welsh Cup.
In 1886 he won his first international cap for Wales against Scotland at Hampden Park. John Doughty scored all four goals in the 11-0 victory over Ireland in March 1888. All told, he played eight games for his country.
Doughty left Newton Heath in 1891.
John Doughty died in Manchester on April 1937.
