Dick Walker played for local Sunday morning side, Becontree Athletic, until he was spotted by one of West Ham's scouts in 1932. After an extended trial he signed for the club in 1933. He made his debut as right-half against Burnley in August, 1934. Two years later he replaced Jim Barrett at centre half. During the Second World War he saw military action and was mentioned in military dispatches. After the war he had difficulty obtaining a first-team place but continued to play for the reserves.
