Paul Martin

Paul Martin

Paul Martin was born in Herbenville, France in 1864. His family moved to England in 1872 and after leaving school was employed as a wood-engraver producing pictures for magazines.

Martin purchased a camera and in 1888 began taking pictures of working people on the streets of London. He also used a disguised camera to take photographs of people on holiday. This was probably the first example of the use of a "candid camera".

His London by Gaslight (1896) was highly praised and he turned professional in 1899.

A member of the Royal Photographic Society, Paul Martin died in 1942.
