William Kueffner was born in Germany. He lived in Mecklenburg before emigrating to America. He lived in Texas but as an opponent of slavery he moved North on the outbreak of the American Civil War. He joined the Union Army and over the next four years took part in 110 engagements and was wounded four times. By the end of the war Kueffner had reached the rank of colonel. Kueffner died in 1893.
