Dash Wheels

Dash wheels were large hollow wheels divided into four compartments, into which bundles of cloth and water were placed. Impurities were washed out of the cloth as the rapidly revolving wheels threw it backwards and forwards. In the 1820s dash wheels were replaced by washing machines.
