Battle of Scra

The attack for the conquest of the very important point of Scra du Legen was one of the most important battles that took place at the Macedonian Front. The Bulgarian army had been fortified with perfect nets of trenches, large number of soldiers and big quantity war material. Organiser of the conquest was the French General Gerome who cooperated with Greek Staff officers . The Greek divisions of Serres, Aegean, Crete, Archipelagos, the XVI French Colonial division and the first African Regiment also participated to the battle.

The attack broke out on the 16th of May 1918 with powerful allied bombing of enemies posts and until the night, the infantry had taken over the places predicted by the plans. The first morning hours of the 17th May, the charge of Greek power resulted in the conquest of Scra du Legen despite the serious losses (434 dead, 1975 wounded).

Result of the combined operations of the Greek infantry, artillery and air force from 17th to 30th May was to take over the Bulgarian positions in a range of 12 km, to capture 1700 prisoners and take enormous amount of war material. However, the great importance of the battle of Scra was that it contributed to the trust of the Allied towards the war capabilities of the Greek army and, at the same time, to the demoralization of the Bulgarian army.
