Mayall's
Studio at 91 Kings Road

A
photograph showing part of Brighton's sea-front towards the end of the
19th century. The tall, impressive
building on the left, alongside Hobden's Swimming Baths, is the Grand
Hotel which opened in 1864. In
the centre of the main picture is the photographic studio of John Jabez
Edwin Mayall.(A close-up of
Mayall's studio can be seen to the right.)
Mayall's
Photographic Portrait Studio opened for business on Monday, 18th July
1864, five days
before the Grand Hotel opened its doors to the public. To
the right of Mayall's studio is the Palace Pier
under construction and behind that the Chain Pier, which was destroyed
by a storm in 1896.
