Alex McCartney started his football career in Ireland. He played for Distillery, Ulster and Linfield before joining Everton. In 1905 McCartney joined West Ham with a couple of his Everton team-mates, John Russell and George Kitchen. However, like Russell, he was never able to obtain a regular place in the side and only played six games that season. He returned to Ireland to play for Belfast Celtic. McCartney also obtained six international caps.
